Southwick Beach lies immediately to the east of historic Shoreham Harbour, where the River Adur enters on a gentle slope. The beach here is predominantly shingle with isolated areas at low tide for wet sand and shingle; it can even act as an extension into river estuary (or ‘tidal Marsh’) when tides are high enough! As one would expect given its location next door though – this stretch has always had issues due mainly due sea level rise but also storms etc., so recent years have seen significant investment in improving defenses against them too: there’s now concrete steps down from behind promenade which lead directly onto compacted rock shelters built right up against wall along the shore line.:
